When I first started photographing trains there was a diversity of switching locomotives. There were various models and shapes of ALCo, FM, Baldwin, EMD and even little GE diesels that worked doing the then plentiful switcher assignments. Then, like a flood, SW1500s came in. Suddenly we seemed to be drowning in a sea of sameness. Like many others — I, and the group I was with, called SW1500s cruds. They were great locomotives and they were everywhere. Engine crews loved them. I would often photograph them with black and white, saving the valuable color film for the vanishing good stuff.
