SP ALCo S-2 1780

Southern Pacific (SP) 1780 was the last SP ALCo S-2 to work in Oakland, CA. SP 1780 was in Homestead Yard, West Oakland, CA date not recorded, likely 1972.
SP 1780 was an ALCo S-2. Reportedly it was built in 1950, builders number 77047, as SP 1439, SP Class DS-105. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 1780, SP Class AS410-3.
The disposition of this locomotive is: sold 1973 and scrapped in 1974.

BNSF 7702 led a southbound train through Walong, around the loop, headed toward Tehachapi, CA at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
BNSF 7702 is a GE ES44DC. Reportedly: it was built by in 2005 serial number 55762.

Westbound ATSF Approaching Woodford

Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) 7449 led a westbound east of Woodford, CA in the Tehachapi Mountains near milepost 350, on Sunday, May 14, 1989.
ATSF 7449 was a GE B40-8. Reportedly it was built in 1989 as ATSF 7449 B40-8 serial number 45950, the last engine of the 7410 class. In 1995 it was wrecked at Tejon, NM and was repaired. It was renumbered BNSF 8639 in 2000 and subsequently became BNSF 597.

ALCos Meet Lima

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, SP 2400 was with 2409 leading a local freight passing a train lead by SP 4445, a Lima 4-8-4, SP Class GS-4. This is at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers (TCSME) model railroad club in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA.
My C-415 models are both English (Bowser) models. The 4445 is my son's BLI model.
The real SP 2400 was an ALCo C-415, SP Class AS415-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1966 builder's number 3458-1. Sold in 1977 to Fundidora Monterrey a steel mill in Monterrey, Mexico with some other C-415s.

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, SP 2400 was with 2409 leading a local freight leaving "Pleasanton" after being passed by an ACE train. This is at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers (TCSME) model railroad club in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA.
My models are both English (Bowser) ALCo C-415s.

At 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, a northbound 2+2 UP stack train was at Woodford,  west of Tehachapi, CA. Power on this train was UP 7989, 7821 + 7181, 8138.
UP 7821 is a GE ES44AC. Reportedly: it is called an AC45CCTE by Union Pacific. It was built in 2008, serial number 58967.

BNSF 5676 is a GE AC44CW. Reportedly: it was built in 2004, builders number 63246.

BNSF 7215 is a GE ES44DC. Reportedly, it was built 2009, serial number 59759.

Southern Pacific (SP) 5317 was leading 8844 and other big EMDs on an SP westbound at Woodford, CA on Monday, October 21, 1974. 
SP 5317 was an EMD SD39, SP Class EF623-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1968 by EMD, builders number 34012. In 1994 it was renumbered 5298 to make room for D&RGW SD45s. 
The disposition of this locomotive was: retired in 1999 and scrapped in 2002.

SD39s at Mojave

Southern Pacific (SP) SD39 5308 and fellow SD39 5303 switched cars in the SP yard in Mojave, CA on Thursday, March 29, 1973. 

SP 5308 was an EMD SD39, SP Class EF623-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1968, builders number 34006.

The disposition of this locomotive was: retired in 1995 and sold in 1996 to Progress Rail. According to conflicting sources: Sold in 1999 to National Railway Equipment. Rebuilt to SD40-2M. Leased to UP, 4763. Renumbered to UP 2810 in 2001. Retired in 2002. Other Reporting marks and numbers reported as associated with this serial number may include CEFX 2810 and WAMX 4218.

Paul Young said, "Switching the West end of the yard. I see the old Union 76 gas station in the background. This is probably the Mojave shorts (LAMJY) setting out & switching it's train. Once that was completed, they would assemble the outbound (MJLAY) train and head East, provided they didn't die on the law. The LAMJY/MJLAY would often have work to do in Palmdale and/or Lancaster. Nice catch, Steve Sloan!"

BNSF 7524 is a GE ES44DC. Reportedly it was built in 2007, serial number 57915.

Caltrain at Agnew

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Caltrain, Joint Powers Board (JPBX) 920 is leading Capitol Corridor Train 733 approaching the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA.
JPBX 920 "Morgan Hill" is an MPI F40PH-2C. Reportedly: It has serial number 0498-1. MPI built it for Caltrain in 1998. It's been leased to Caltrans for Capitol Corridor service.

SP 3604 in Oakland

Southern Pacific (SP) GP9 3604 led GP9E 3749 on an unknown date in June 1974 in Oakland, CA. According to OPRRMS, "The train is eastbound (southbound), just about to cross Market Street, between Magnolia Tower and Jack London Square. The building in the right background is gone, but the other one in the left background is still there, converted to small business and lofts/work spaces. The 3604 was unique for having a replacement Leslie S3 horn. It's visible in this photo. The unit likely acquired it from the UP during the time SP and UP had a run-thru operation between Roseville and North Platte/Council Bluffs during the early 1960's. Both railroads suppplied GP9's."
SP 3604 was an EMD GP9 SP Class EF418-7. Reportedly: it was built in 1957, builders number 22945, as SP 5763, SP Class DF-607.
In 1965 it was renumbered and reclassed becoming SP 3604. This locomotive was upgraded in 1975 emerging as SP 3786 EMD GP9R, SP Class EF418E-3.
The disposition of this locomotive is: retired and sold in 1995. Became Inter-Rail Link (IRTX) 1101, In 1998 became Arco Products 4554.

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, a northbound massive 5+2+0 BNSF grain + manifest was winding its way from Allard toward Tunnel 2. The power was BNSF 6058, 7632, 6257, 4339, 4110 +
7524, 5086.
BNSF 6058 is a GE ES44AC. Reportedly: it was built in 2006, serial number 57033.

In August 2026 my great friend Ken Compton and took a trip to the Tehachapi Mountains between Bakersfield and Mojave, California.
On Saturday, August 8, 2026, a southbound Union Pacific (UP) 3+1+0 intermodal train at Monolith had UP 5610, 7816, 7763 + 8709. This was the last train we shot on this trip.
UP 5610 is a GE AC44CW, UP designation AC44CWCTE. Reportedly it was built in 2004, serial number 55203.

UP 6409 is a GE/Wabtec C44ACM. Reportedly: it was built in 1995 as an AC44CW, SP 363, SP Class GF644L-2, serial number 48779.
