SW1500 Leading a Freight

Southern Pacific (SP) 2538 led black widow GP9 3611 and GP9 3581 at the Homestead Yard, West Oakland, CA, on Monday, December 17, 1973.
SP 2538 was an SW1500, SP Class ES415-3. Reportedly: it was built in 1969, construction number 35231. In 2006 it was renumbered (and repainted?) UPY 1123. It later became Knoxville & Holston River Railroad (KXHR) 1123.

Red Cab Rear SW1500

Southern Pacific (SP) SW1500 2479 showed its unique solid red rear cab paint job in Eugene, OR on Friday, June 21, 1974.
SP 2479 is an SW1500, SP Class ES415-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1967, builder number 33139. It was retired in 1994 and sold in 1995 to Omni-Trax being resold to Minnesota Corn Processors (MCP) 2479 in Columbus, Nebraska. It was repainted green with gold and beige bands.

SP 2575 on the CCMRC

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA, my HO model of Southern Pacific (SP) 2575 crossed the middle trestle over "Mouse Creek." This is a Sunset Models "Prestige Series" factory painted DC Brass 2-8-0.
The real SP 2575 was a Baldwin built SP Class C9 Consolidation. Reportedly: it was built in 1905, builders number 25493. It was scrapped in 1953.

UP 6909 in Yermo

Union Pacific (UP) 6909 was in storage in Yermo, CA. on Saturday, April 30, 1983. Note the GP30B behind it.

UP 6909 was an EMD DDA40X. Reportedly: it was built in 1969, serial number 34535, from UP series 6900-6946. Disposition: retired 1984, traded to EMD in 1986 and scrapped.

SP GP35 6613 in Fresno

Southern Pacific (SP) GP35 6613 was sitting in the power pool in Fresno, CA in early 1978.
SP 6613 was an EMD GP35, SP Class EF425-3. Reportedly: it was built in 1965, builders number 29718, SP 7716, SP Class DF-625. In 1965 it was renumbered and reclassified to SP 6613.

This locomotive was upgraded in 1979 emerging as GP35R, SP 6331 SP Class EF425N-1. It was reportedly, retired in 1996, sold to Progress Rail.

Southern Pacific (SP) Cotton Belt (SSW) GP30 5004 was waiting in Fresno, CA, for a call to work in early 1978.

SSW 5004 was an EMD GP30, SP Class EF423C-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1963, builders number 5650-05 28176, as SSW 754, SSW Class Z-22. In 1965 it was renumbered and reclassed.
The disposition of this locomotive is, retired 1986 & sold.

Southern Pacific (SP) 1278 was in Fresno, CA, in early 1978.

SP 1278 was an ALCo S6, built with MU capability, in SP Class AS409-5. Reportedly: it built in 1955 as SP 4642, SP Class DF-307, construction number 81429. It was reclassified as Class DS-607 in 1963. In 1965 it was renumbered and reclassified to SP 1278. It was retired 1978 and sold.

SP 6727 was a GE U25B, SP Class GF425-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1963 by, builders number 34697, as SP 7527, SP Class DF-622. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 6727.
The reported disposition of this locomotive is: retired 1984, scrapped 1985.
