Southern Pacific (SP) 6950 is sitting in Roseville, CA on Sunday, September 8, 1974.
6950 is an EMD SD35 (SD35E) SP Class EF625E-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1965 as an SD35, SP 4838, SP Class DF503, builder's number 29852. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 6922 SP Class EF625-1.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1974 emerging as SP SD35E 6950 SP Class EF625E-1, in 1980 it was reclassified as heavy switcher 3102 SP Class ES625E-1. In 1993 it was again renumbered to 2957.
The disposition of this locomotive is, retired in 1999 and sold in 2002.

Union Pacific (UP) 9912 and 9923 lead Mission Bay Turn, headed north on Monday, May 20, 2024, at College Park in San José, CA.
UP 9912, an EMD SD32ECO (UP Designation SD59MX). Reportedly: it was built in 1991 by EMD as 6276, a model SD60M, builders number 20107425-011. It was renumbered 2431, retired as such in 2012, rebuilt as UP SD59MX 9911.

SP 7302 approaching Tunnel 1

On Sunday, June 4, 1995, Southern Pacific (SP) 7302 leads 7511 and other EMD motors uphill out of Caliente, California towards Tunnel 1 and Bealville, CA.
SP 7302 is an EMD SD40 (SD40R), SP Class EF630R-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1966 as a model SD40, SP 8422, SP Class EF630-1, builder's number 31503. This locomotive was upgraded in 1980 emerging as SP 7302, SD40R, SP Class EF630R-1. The disposition of this locomotive is, retired 2001 and sold.

SP 4338 and more SD9Es at Lombard, CA

Southern Pacific (SP) 4338, 4346, 4349, and one more SD9 (SD9E) locomotive leads an NWP bound train through Lombard, CA on Friday Lombard, CA on Friday, July 30, 1976.
SP 4338 is an EMD SD9 (SD9E), SP Class EF618E-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1955 as a model SD9, builders number 19939, SP 5398, SP Class DF-122. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 3876 SP Class EF618-3. It was upgraded in 1971 emerging as SP 4338 EMD SD9 (SD9E), SP Class EF618E-1.
The disposition of this locomotive is, retired March 1997. Sold April 1997. Became NREX 4338. Leased to Cargil. Current status not known.

WP Detour Detour

Western Pacific (WP) 3554 on the point of the SN Detour which is itself detouring off the ATSF and onto the SP. This train is caught heading east, crossing the SP bridge at Mossdale, CA in 1980 on a date that was not recorded. The Detour detour was probably due to the October 1980 washout on the Santa Fe in the delta near Trull that swallowed a train.
WP 3554 is an EMD GP40-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1980, builder number 786277-5, in the series WP 3545-3559. After the merger it became UP 909, then UP 2911, then UP 5318, then UP 9986.

SP ALCo S6 Street Running

Southern Pacific (SP) 1210 is on the streets of LA. Location: Alameda Street, near Union Station. The Hollywood Freeway (the 101) is on the left of this photo. Photo was taken on Tuesday, October 22, 1974. This was shot through the windshield of my 1969 Chevy Nova.
SP 1210 is an ALCo S6, SP Class AS409-1. Reportedly: it was built by ALCo in 1955 as SP 1043, SP Class DS-9, builder's number 81293. It became SP 1210, SP Class AS409-1 in the 1965 renumbering. It was retired in 1980 and became National Metal and Steel 518 in LA Harbor. In 1986 it went to Foster Farms.

Caltrain in Santa Cruz

On Saturday, May 18, 1996, Joint Powers Board, CalTrain (JPBX) 908 leads the Suntan Special across Seabright Avenue near the intersection with Murray St., in Santa Cruz, CA. It was still the SP then.
JPBX 908 is an EMD F40, "Redwood City." Reportedly: it was built as CDTX 908 in 1985 serial number 836077-9. It was overhauled by Alstom in 1999. Caltrain Designation F40PH-2-CAT, it is rated at 3200 hp and features a Caterpillar 6-cylinder HEP generator.

SP 3778 in Westley, CA

Southern Pacific (SP) Kodachrome Geep 3778 and a GP38-2 on the westside hauler, switching cars at Westley, CA on an unrecorded date in January, 1991.
SP 3778 is an EMD GP9 (GP9E), SP Class EF418E-3. Reportedly: it was built in 1957 as a GP9, builders number 22970, SP 5788, SP Class DF-611. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 3629 SP Class EF418-7.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1975 emerging as GP9E SP 3778 SP Class EF418E-3.
The disposition of this locomotive is, retired 1993, sold 1995 to Omni-Trax. Became New Brunswick Southern 3778, then Ottawa Valley Rail Link 4201?, then sold to American Coal Company. Current status not known.

SP 3201 leading Number 12

Southern Pacific (SP) 3201 on the point of Amtrak number 12 in Newark, CA on Saturday, May 12, 1973.
SP 3201 is an EMD SDP45, SP Class EP636-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1967, builders number 32850. The SDP45s were later reclassified to freight service in 1985 and assigned SP Class EF636-13. It was retired in 1990, and sold. It was scrapped in 1996.

SP AM-2 4205 in Ashland, OR

The notes with the collection say: Southern Pacific (SP) 4205 is working in Ashland, OR on Saturday, December 8, 1934.
Reportedly: SP 4-6-6-2 4205 was built in 1911 by Baldwin as a Mallet Mogul (MM), SP 4205, builder's number 36703, SP Class MM-2. This locomotive was upgraded in 1929 and converted to simple emerging as an Articulated Mogul (AM) SP 4205, SP Class AM-2. In 1938 it was renumered to 3905.
The disposition of this locomotive is, vacated and scrapped in 1947.
Photographer most likely Bill Darrough, from the Darrough Collection. Since negatives were extensively traded it's possible Bill was not the photographer.

SP 4428 at Logan

I have no notes from the collection regarding the date and location of this photo. It appears to be Logan, CA, circa 1940. The number boards are blurry but they appear to say 2-98. There's a small saddle tank steam engine to the right of the train. Photographer most likely Bill Darrough, from the Darrough Collection. Since negatives were extensively traded it's possible Bill was not the photographer.
SP 4428 is a Lima 4-8-4, SP Class GS-3. Reportedly: it was built in 1937 by Lima, builders number 7733. SP 4428 was vacated in 1958 and scrapped in 1959.

MoPac caboose in West, TX

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, we drove from Dallas to Austin, TX. We stopped for lunch in West, TX. There we saw Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP) caboose 13057, it is displayed at the West, TX Depot Museum on the corner of Washington and Broadway in West, Texas.
MP 13057 is a compact body bay window caboose. Reportedly: MP caboose 13057 was built by MP shops circa 1981. After the merger, it was assigned to UP class CA-34. Vacated in 1993. Donated to the West, TX Depot Museum.

MKT Caboose in West, Texas

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, we drove from Dallas to Austin, TX. We stopped for lunch in West, TX. There we saw Missouri Kansas Texas (MKT) caboose 213. It is displayed at the West, TX Depot Museum on the corner of Washington and Broadway in West, Texas.
MKT 213 is a former MKT Caboose. Reportedly: it was removed from service in 1989 it is displayed on the southeast corner of Washington and Broadway in West, Texas.

SP Narrow Gauge at Mina

Southern Pacific (SP) Narrow Gauge 17 is leading 4-6-0 SP 9 at Mina, Nevada in August 1937. From the Jack Darrough Collection. Photographer likely Bill Darrough used with permission.
SP 17, was a Narrow Gauge Baldwin 4-6-0. Reportedly it was built in 1887, builders number 8487, as South Pacific Coast 21. The disposition of this locomotive was retired in 1945 and scrapped in 1952.

PNWR Westsider in 2017

On Saturday, August 26, 2017, Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR) 2309, 2311, 2304 are leading the Westsider at Whiteson, OR. I was out with Vic Neves who was the great tour guide on this day.
PNWR 2309 "Philomath" is an EMD GP39-2. Reportedly: PNWR 2309 was built by EMD in 1974 as ATSF 3608 builder number 74602-9. It also had the reporting mark and number WPRR 2309.

SP Pacific in Niles Canyon

On Sunday, March 28, 2010, Golden Gate Railroad Museum's (GGRM) Southern Pacific (SP) 4-6-2 Class P8 Pacific 2472 is being towed backwards by Pacific Locomotive Association's SP SD9 (SD9E) 5472 which is on the west end of the train. The location is called Estates Crossing which is just west of Niles Canyon Railway's Brightside Yard. Though it looks like the 2472 is a manned rear end DPU, it is not!
SP 2472 is a Baldwin Locomotive Works built SP Class P-8, 4-6-2. Reportedly it was built in 1921, builders number 54477. It was vacated in 1957 and donated to San Mateo County in 1959. In 1976 a group of volunteers started restoring the locomotive. This group became the GGRM, the current owner-operator of SP 2472.

SP SD9 on the PLA

Pacific Locomotive Association (PLA) owned Southern Pacific (SP) 5472 in Sunol, CA on the PLA's Niles Canyon Railway on Sunday, March 28, 2010.
PLA’s SP 5472 is an EMD SD9, SP Class DF-125. Reportedly: it was built in 1956 by EMD as an SD9, builders number 21297, SP 5472, SP Class DF-125. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 3946, SP Class EF618-5.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1977 emerging as SP 4423, SD9E SP Class EF618R-1.
The reported disposition of this locomotive is: 4423 was sold to Omnitrax the summer of 1993, along with about 100 other units. It became NWP 4423, purchased by Howard Wise of the Oakland Terminal Railway. PLA contracted to get this locomotive just one day before it was to be scrapped.

Pacific Locomotive Association's (PLA) owned Western Pacific (WP) 918D EMD F7A is in operation in the Sunol, CA area on the Niles Canyon Railway (NCRY) substituting for an ailing GGRM SP P8 2472 on Sunday, March 28, 2010.
WP 918D is an EMD F7. Reportedly it was built in 1950, builders number 8973. It became WP 918 in 1980. It was retired in 1981. It was donated to PLA in 1982. It was restored to operation. It was restored in 2002-2005 and moved to NCRY to operate again as the 918D.

SN 145 in Concord, CA

Western Pacific subsidiary Sacramento Northern (SN) 44 tonner 145 in Concord, CA on an unknown date in the 1960s. This may be one of my first train photographs.
According to good sources SN 145 was built in 1946 by General Electric as a model 44-ton, builders number 28335, SN 145.
The disposition of this locomotive is, it was sold to Chrome Crankshaft Co in June 1972 and sold as Northwest Oklahoma Ry 2 in 1973. It was sold to Westmac Inc in 1976 and sold as Cargill Inc 3 in 1984. It was sold as Shepard Grain Co 3 in October 1998 and sold as Champaign Landmark Inc 3 in October 2003. It was sold for scrap to Western Star Rail Services in 2008.

California Northern (CFNR) SD9 203 is sitting at Napa Junction, CA, on Sunday, July 14, 1996.
CFNR 203 is an EMD SD9 (SD9E). Reportedly: it was built in 1955 by EMD as a model SD9, SP 5377, SP Class DF-121, builder's number 20228. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 3855 SP Class EF618-2.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1971 emerging as SP 4331 SD9E SP Class EF618E-1.
This locomotive was sold 1994, becoming CFNR 203.
Reporting marks and numbers associated with this locomotive reportedly include: SLC 602, KMGX 57602, WRIX 602, TMRX 602, KMGX 602.

BNSF 8378 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2015 builders number 63142.

DART at Garland

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) 130 is westbound on the Blue Line, heading toward Dallas, at the Downtown Garland, TX station on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
DART 130 is a Kinki Sharyo Super Light Rail Vehicle (SLRV). Reportedly: it was a two unit light rail Fleet 50 vehicle manufactured by Kinki Sharyo and operated by DART. It subsequently was modified into a three unit SLRV jointly by DART and Kinki Sharyo. The third section went between the end cars, with low floor boarding and spots for wheelchair users.

On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Trinity Railway Express (TRE) cab car 1002 is leading a train into track 3 at Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station in Dallas, Texas. TRE 120 is shoving on the rear.
TRE 1002 is a Bombardier BiLevel Coach Cab Car. Reportedly it was built in 2003.

Sierra Steam

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SRYC), Sierra Railroad 1922 Baldwin 2-8-0 number 28 under steam in the rain at Jamestown in 1978. Reportedly Sierra 28 was built by Baldwin in 1922, serial number 55254. Reportedly, in February 2009, the 28 was taken out of service after its crown sheet and other parts of the firebox were found to be too thin for legal operation. 28 sat stored in public view in the Jamestown roundhouse awaiting funds until August 2013 when it was torn down for repairs to its firebox along with new flues and Staybolts. After being out of service for a 5-year restoration, the 28 returned to operation on June 1, 2019.

SP Ghost Train

On an unknown date in 1978, SP B30-7 7823 leads an eastbound across the crossing at Antelope, CA during an electrical storm.
SP 7823 is a GE B30-7, SP Class GF430-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1978, builders number 41881.
The disposition of this locomotive is, renumbered to UPY 113, retired in 2003.
Photo notes — Mamiya C33 Camera 80mm f2.8 lens. 45 second exposure on train at f 5.6 to catch motion of lights. Stobonar 780 strobe fired while train was crossing to action and provide ghost train effect. 3 minute subsequent exposure to catch Arcs of gates going up and lightening flashes.
