Union Pacific (UP) C40-8 9163 is leading 9325, 9340 and the Milpitas Turn at Midway, CA (Altamont Pass) on Monday, March 20, 1989. It is meeting the 659 (ex WP) which is on a work train.
UP 9163 is a GE C40-8. Reportedly UP 9163 was built in 1988, builders number 45612.
UP 659 is an EMD GP40. Reportedly: it was built in 1966, builders number 31671, as Western Pacific 3510, WP Class RS-68. Renumbered to UP in 1984. Retired 1993. Rebuilt by MK as GP40-3 KCS GP40R 4773, then KCS 2814, then rebuilt by EMD as a GP22ECO.
