Western Pacific (WP) 704 is sitting in the WP power pool just off Adeline Street, in Oakland, CA, in the summer of 1973. Note the old Adeline Street bridge in the background.
WP 704 is an EMD GP7, WP Class RS-62. Reportedly: it was built in 1952 builder's number 17028.
The disposition of this locomotive is: assigned, but never wore, UP 102. Sold to Mountain Diesel Transportation (MDT) 704 in 1987.

SP 9504 in Stockton

Southern Pacific SD45X 9504, still wearing EMD demonstrator paint, approaches the diamonds at Stockton, CA. The date of this photo was not recorded, likely in 1973.
SP 9504 is an EMD SD45X, SP Class EF642-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1971 to SP specifications as EMD 4202, builders number 36807. It was sold to Southern Pacific in 1972 becoming SP 9504.
The disposition of this locomotive is, retired in 1984, scrapped.

WP 1503 is an EMD SW1500. Reportedly: it was built in 1973 builders number 72692-3. It's the last switcher built for the WP. It became UP 1317, then later UPY-1041. In 2011 the UP donated it to the Feather River Rail Society in Portola, CA.

SN 402 getting tested

Sacramento Northern (SN) 402 getting tested outside the WP roundhouse in Stockton, CA, circa 1973.
SN402 is an EMC SW1. It was built in 1939 for the Western Pacific Railroad, as WP 502, builder's number 988. It was the second of three WP SW1s, the first diesel-electric locomotives purchased by the railroad. It was sold to WP subsidiary Sacramento Northern Railway in the 1960s, it went to the California State Railroad Museum after the Union Pacific merger in 1982.

SSW 3642, GP9

Cotton Belt (SSW) GP9 3642 sits in the sun in Phoenix, AZ on an unknown date in May 1972. I got this in trade and I wish I knew who the photographer of this was. I think it is a fellow named "Jerry". If it is yours, please let me know.
SSW 3642 is an EMD GP9, SP Class EF418C-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1957 builders number 24076, SSW 821, SSW Class Z-17.
In 1965 it was renumbered to SSW 3642 EMD GP9, SP Class EF418C-1
This locomotive was upgraded in 1975 becoming GP9 (GP9E) SSW 3811 SP Class EF418S-3.
The disposition of this locomotive is: Retired and sold in 1995. Presumed scrapped.

SP SD45T-2 9168 in Roseville

SP SD45T-2 9168 on a reefer block (OGRVR) at Center Street in Roseville, CA on Sunday, September 29, 1974. According to Bruce Holder, "When they widened Atlantic St they eliminated Berry St crossing and put in a new crossing aligned with Center St." My dad was a Western Division engineer on the SP from 1945 - 1977. He referred to every train that was made up of solid reefers as a "reefer block."
SP 9168 is an EMD SD45T-2, SP Class EF636-7. Reportedly: it was built in 1972, builders number 7336-03.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1986 emerging as SP 6783 SP Class EF636LR-6.
The disposition of this locomotive is, sold to Helm in 1995 as HATX 935. Rebuilt to an EMD SD40-3 it became DMIR 413 in Dec. 1996.

On Sunday, June 23, 2024, a westbound BNSF Railway (BNSF) 2+2 intermodal train at East Valentine, AZ with BNSF 3933, 5043 + NS 3650, 4305 meets an eastbound intermodal 4+2+0 that has BNSF 4246, 3952, 9065, 6414 + 6702, 5708.
BNSF 3933 is a GE ET44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2015 by GE builders number 63186.
BNSF 4246 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built circa 2015-16, serial number 63961.
NS 4305 is a GE/Wabtec AC44C6M. Reportedly: it was built in 1998 by GE as a Dash 9-44CW, NS 9171, serial 50424. In 2020 it was rebuilt by Wabtec becoming the 4305.

SP 9076 East

It used to be I shot black and white film for the boring stuff. Color film was expensive for me In those days Southern Pacific (SP) SD45's and UP SD40's were considered boring, like GEVOs today. SP 9076, UP 3049, SP 9195 and possibly others lead a freight around the wye at Davis, California on an unrecorded date around 1973. The train is coming off the CalP and heading up what now is the California Northern. Then, it was the West Valley Line of the Southern Pacific. According to WAF, (This train) "is the OPS from Oakland, the general merchandise train (mostly lumber empties) between Oakland and Portland. Whether it actually went all the way to Portland is unknown. I suspect it got humped in Eugene and its Portland/Seattle cars forwarded to Portland."
SP 9076 is an EMD SD45, SP Class EF636-5. Reportedly: it built in 1969 builders number 34911. This locomotive was upgraded in 1984 emerging as SP 7489 SD45R, SP Class EF636LR-1.
The disposition of this locomotive is, sold 1994 to Helm Atlantic Leasing, HATX 915. Rebuilt to SD40-2M HLCX 6413.
